Endothelial dysfunction

Endothelial dysfunction means an anomaly that develops in the tunic (layer) covering the internal surface of the arterial and venous vessels and, more precisely, an alteration of the normal endothelial function, which involves the loss of some structural and / or functional characteristics.

The endothelium can be considered a real organ, able to secrete numerous chemical mediators in response to a great variety of signals.

At the parietal level, the endothelium modulates the tone and the vessel structure, playing a major role in the anatomical remodelling observed in diseases such as hypertension. At the luminal level, the endothelium modulates blood coagulation and interactions between blood cells, leukocytes and platelets.

Impairment of the secretory activity of the endothelium is responsible for its dysfunction; the factors which can cause functional impairment of the endothelium are numerous and are, for the most part, identified with cardiovascular risk factors.

PIAM, with its specific products for the cardiovascular therapeutic area, plays an important role in making available targeted therapeutic approaches for diseases caused by endothelial dysfunction.
